London hates my skin. Fact. The last two weeks has seen a veritable eruption take place on my face and the only change has been the new job. Long hours, pollution and the tiring effort of commuting have somehow managed to both dry out my skin leaving me with a deathly pallor and still cause a teenage-angst-worthy breakout all over my face. As someone who is normally very proud of having good skin it’s a bit of a nightmare. So while racking my brains for a solution I delved into my memory to find a press launch I had been to recently that might just be able to come to my rescue. And that’s when it hit me. The ESPA press breakfast.
I am an ESPA addict. Whether it is treating myself to a luxurious treatment in one of their spas (the Corinthia London is just heaven to me and also a Conde Nast Traveller favourite), or pampering myself at home with their sumptuous bath and body oils, I just can’t get enough. So really, I’m a little surprised with myself that I haven’t blabbed on about their new wonder product sooner. I blame the new job taking over my life.
Without further ado, let me introduce the Optimal Skin ProCleanser. And this is no ordinary cleanser – it is also and exfoliator and leave on face mask all in one compact little pot. Pretty good huh? I was instantly won over by the promise of radiant, beautiful skin, because right now mine certainly isn’t.
So how does it work? Firstly, Moringa seed extract cleanses the skin and removes stubborn make up. And let me tell you, when you wear YSL’s False Lash Effect Mascara in Shocking Black it essentially tattoos your eyelashes black so I am always in serious need of something that is up to the challenge of hard core make up removal. Secondly, naturally melting jojoba spheres gently exfoliate dead skin cells away, gentle being key here, there really is nothing worse than a scratchy exfoliator. Finally, if you have 15 minutes spare use it as a mask. Leaving it on for 15 minutes activates the pumpkin enzymes which work gently to remove dull cells and reveal a lovely healthy glow.
So on Sunday evening as part of my prepping for the week ritual I decided it was a good idea to give the ProCleanser a try for the 15 minutes. Lord knows my skin needed it. To use you just dampen your skin and smooth a small amount over your face, neck and décolleté – you know how a face mask works! Keep working it in small circular motions until all the jojoba beads melt then leave on for 15 minutes to allow the pumpkin enzymes to activate. If you’re using it as a daily cleanser just remove straight away with some damp cotton wool.
To channel the spa feel I sat down with an ESPA Restorative candle which just smells divine and sipped a glass of wine, waiting for the mask to take effect. Ok, I know wine is not a spa thing, but I find it relaxing. Don’t judge. My skin was clearly desperate for some serious pampering because it soaked the mask up like it had been left in the desert for two weeks, not just travelling to and from the city. After 15 minutes of just chilling out I removed the mask – even after two days off from being in London I was amazed to see how much dirt the mask lifted. Delicious. After staring in outrage at the cotton wool pad I actually took a moment to take in how my skin felt. It felt wonderful. Smooth and hydrated. Lovely. I finished up the pampering sesh with my Creme De La Mer moisturiser for a truly luxurious finish. However, it’s meant to be really good with ESPA’s ProSerum too, another one of my favourite products. My skin was clearly in need of some rescue and this did just the trick. Even if it doesn’t last all week it’s definitely something I’m going to be building into my weekly routine. ESPA recommend you use it daily as a cleanser and twice a week as a mask. I’m going to be realistic because I know what I’m like and commit to using it Sunday evenings as part of my weekly pampering. It really is a special treat.
